Creative Northland has an ongoing commitment to making sure that the arts sector in Northland is dynamic, thriving, influential and productive.

Northland YOUth Summit Arts Festival 2017

Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 September 2017.

The Northland Youth Summit is a platform for young people to develop the confidence to speak up about the issues that matter to them and their communities.

This year the Summit will consist of five workshops led by experts in the creative mediums as below:

  • Digital film/video
  • Music
  • Paint & mural
  • Performance & theatre
  • 3D projection mapping

Youth mentors and guides will join the workshops to ensure the two day programme is fully immersive, engaging and nurturing for the youth attendees. At the completion of the Youth Summit 2017, each group will present their finished work, with the film/video group having filmed the two day process and presentations as a documentary record. The collaborative aspect means music from the workshop will be included as a soundtrack for the film/video and resulting images will also become part of the ‘Projecting Youth Futures’ 3D projection mapping travelling show around Northland.

Up to 60 youth can be involved this year! To apply you must be between the ages of 12-24 and from the Northland region. Registrations close 11 August 2017 so don’t miss out – Click here for the registration form.

Background:

A large part of the NYS concept is that the venue moves around Northland. The Northland Youth Summit was last held in Kaikohe in 2015 and this year it will be hosted in Dargaville where the first ever youth summit started.

Leading up to the Northland Youth Summit in 2016 Creative Northland held three youth workshops in Kaikohe, Kaitaia & Kerikeri where participants told stories of their past and wove them into their own dreams for their towns and futures using design and projection mapping. (Projection mapping takes a moving image ie a film or moving artwork and projects it onto buildings, landscape and objects. Check out this YouTube clip for an example

The work done in the Northland Youth Summit workshops will be projection mapped by specialists to develop an epic installation and toured around all the towns in Northland that were involved.
