Wendy Bown

What influenced your journey in pursuing the Arts?
Initially it was loving photography and painting classes in high school which lead to studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Otago.

Who and what inspires you?
I’m inspired by the world around me. Literature, music, beautiful souls, most often nature. Storms, rain, snow, the ocean, the moon, plants, native forest. Also certain people who have come into my life quietly and later I’ve found out something amazing they’ve done or been through. That always inspires me.

What is your medium of choice?
For my commercial work I shoot stills and video. In my art work and creative play I shoot stills, video and draw and paint.

How would you describe your creative style?
Natural hues, simple, emphasis on form through strong shapes and shadows, use of silhouettes.

What does your art mean to you?
Losing time, finding flow. Having a voice. Creativity spills messily throughout life. It’s having ideas and following them through, feeling a need to create something of value that enriches the world. Sometimes it’s just needing to make stuff.

Do you have a fave piece of art and if so who is it by, and why is it your fave?
A large painting painted for me by artist Greer Clayton. 1 x 1.4 metres of Bethalls beach in the Waitakere’s. I love everything about it, the colours, the abstracted forms, the shimmery surface, the size and that its of Bethalls, a special place to me.

How would you describe the Arts in Aotearoa?
Incredibly varied and interesting across so many genres and mediums.
