The Drawing Show
May 19 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
An event every day that begins at 10:00 am, repeating until May 19, 2019
A wide range of drawing styles will be on show at Kohukohu’s Village Arts Gallery in April and May.
The invited artists are from the Hokianga and wider Northland region, or have ties to this area. The exhibition shows the work of artists, illustrators, cartoonists, designers, and teachers. It also features a capsule collection celebrating the calligraphic and hand drawn demonstrations that teacher James Wyley did for his Broadwood School students, decades ago.
Drawing serves a number of functions in these artists’ art practice: as a way to explore, record, or capture ideas; as a preparatory process prior to paint, print, or other media; and as a work in itself.
The title of the exhibition, The Drawing Show, is not only descriptive. The ability to draw – or the confidence to draw – is a great privilege. But it can also be learned, and can facilitate far better seeing, as people who take it up later in life attest. Art instruction talks of ‘drawing in’ and ‘drawing out’.
Those artists, who exhibit regularly at Village Arts, such as Rachel Miller, Bev Cox, Anthony Ellison, Marg Morrow, Jane Molloy-Wolt and others, and who use drawing as a major method in their process, will show 3-5 works each in a range of media including pencil, paint, pastel, biro, and drawing over photographs.
