Creative Northland has an ongoing commitment to making sure that the arts sector in Northland is dynamic, thriving, influential and productive.

Northland Youth Summit Arts Festival 2018

The Northland Youth Summit 2018 was held in Whangarei at North Tec from the 5th – 7th of September.

This was a platform for young people to develop the confidence to speak up about the issues and future aspirations that matter to them and their communities.

This is a FREE event for youth aged 12-24 in Northland with 80 spots available.

This year the summit consisted of seven workshops led by experts in the creative mediums as shown below:

Music – Compose and perform a song telling your story in a musical style of the group’s choice.
Visual Arts (Print) – Design a piece of artwork using print methods based on the ‘our visions, our futures’ theme.
3D Digital – Projection mapping is where digital imagery is projected onto buildings/objects etc. through a large scale projector. You will be creating designs that will become a part of a 3D projection mapping exhibition.
Sculpture – In pairs, you will carve a small sculpture out of Oamaru stone reflecting the ‘our visions, our futures’ theme.
Theatre (Performance) – Design and perform a creative theatrical piece revolving around the ‘our visions, our futures’ theme.
Dance (Movement) – Choreograph and perform a dance routine based on the ‘our visions, our futures’ theme.
Film & Photography – The group will make a documentary about the youth summit – learning story-telling skills, how to use a camera, sound and editing equipment. This will showcase the event telling the stories.

Youth will need to select a first choice and a second choice option of workshops they wish to attend as we cannot guarantee placement in the first choice workshop.

Each workshop had a youth mentor to ensure the three-day programme was fully immersive, engaging and nurturing for the youth attendees. At the completion of the Northland Youth Summit, each group presented their finished work.

Accommodation & Food

All youth who attended were supplied with accommodation and food over the 3 days at no cost. All youth stayed on site for the entirety of the event. Youth participants & mentors were accommodated at a local marae.

Key sponsors

This event is not possible without the support from key sponsors. We are extremely thankful to have secured funding and sponsorship from the following businesses:
