Impact of COVID-19 on Arts Sector – Survey March 2020 Results

Thank you all to the 74 creative individuals and organisations who contributed to our COVID-19 survey which we sent out 27/3/2020. The information has given us a good insight into how the early stages of COVID-19 have impacted our regional sector and have informed us on actions that we can take as a response to the survey results. Here are some of our key findings:

  • The survey was completed by 74 respondents in the creative sector representing 15 businesses, 18 not-for-profit organisations, 29 individual entrepreneurs and 12 hobbyists.
  • At least a total of 361 events/activities/programs/workshops have been canceled by our respondents as a result of COVID-19.
  • For the creative sector, it is obviously difficult to sustain income without these events. At this stage 51% of respondents said they can get by financially without the canceled event or service, 37% were unsure, while 12% said they would not be able to.
  • When asked about applying for government assistance i.e. wage subsidy & business continuity, only 33% of respondents said they would apply while 47% were unsure. At this stage, 45% said that if they were to successfully receive the government support they would be able to sustain themselves while a higher percentage of 49% are unsure if they would.
  • As for Creative NZ’s financial assistance, 41% said they would apply with the majority of 59% saying they wouldn’t.
