The Northland Youth Summit 2018 will be held in Whangarei at North Tec from the 5th – 7th of September.
This is a platform for young people to develop the confidence to speak up about the issues and future aspirations that matter to them and their communities.
This is a FREE event for youth aged 12-24 in Northland with 80 spots available.
This year the summit consists of six workshops led by experts in the creative mediums as shown below:
Music – Compose and perform a song telling your story in a musical style of the group’s choice.
Visual Arts (Print) – Design a piece of artwork using print methods based on the ‘our visions, our futures’ theme.
3D Digital – Projection mapping is where digital imagery is projected onto buildings/objects etc. through a large scale projector. You will be creating designs that will become a part of a 3D projection mapping exhibition.
Sculpture – In pairs, you will carve a small sculpture out of Oamaru stone reflecting the ‘our visions, our futures’ theme.
Theatre (Performance) – Design and perform a creative theatrical piece revolving around the ‘our visions, our futures’ theme.
Dance (Movement) – Choreograph and perform a dance routine based on the ‘our visions, our futures’ theme.
Film & Photography – The group will make a documentary about the youth summit – learning story-telling skills, how to use a camera, sound and editing equipment. This will showcase the event telling the stories.
Youth will need to select a first choice and a second choice option of workshops they wish to attend as we cannot guarantee placement in the first choice workshop.
Youth mentors and guides will join the workshops to ensure the three-day programme is fully immersive, engaging and nurturing for the youth attendees. At the completion of the Northland Youth Summit, each group will present their finished work.
Accommodation & Food
All youth attending will be supplied with accommodation and food over the 3 days at no cost. All youth are expected to stay on site for the entirety of the event (unless discussed prior with the event organisers). Youth participants, facilitators, mentors and staff will be accommodated at a local marae.
Youth will need to apply* (registrations all online this year) and a panel will select the youth for each workshop based on who is the best fit (not necessarily the most experienced, provide a good reason why you want to attend and you could be one of the first youth selected!).
All youth under 18 years old will need parental/caregiver consent (best to fill out at home so you can put in their details).
Registrations may close earlier than expected based on the number of applications received so don’t wait until the last minute to apply!

A large part of the NYS concept is that the venue moves around Northland. The Northland Youth Summit was last held in Kaikohe in 2015 and this year it will be hosted in Dargaville where the first ever youth summit started.
Leading up to the Northland Youth Summit in 2016 Creative Northland held three youth workshops in Kaikohe, Kaitaia & Kerikeri where participants told stories of their past and wove them into their own dreams for their towns and futures using design and projection mapping. (Projection mapping takes a moving image ie a film or moving artwork and projects it onto buildings, landscape and objects. Check out this YouTube clip for an example
The work done in the Northland Youth Summit workshops will be projection mapped by specialists to develop an epic installation and toured around all the towns in Northland that were involved.
